In November 2012, mass architecture entered the RIBA competition 'Re-imagining York's Guildhall Complex -connecting city and river'.

The submitted proposal was for a 'York Artisan Food Emporium', a new high-end indoor food market with on-site artisan bakery, coffee roasting house and champagne bar, to provide a platform to showcase the very best local and international produce.

The bustle and life of the indoor markets, such as London’s Leadenhall and Borough Markets, Kirkgate Market in Leeds and Barcelona’s La Boqueria are contrasted with a variety of areas on the upper level overlooking the River Ouse that are comfortable, spacious and calm.

A new river cyclepath /walkway connects the site to the River Ouse and the city, as well as new green spaces. A wetland wildlife corridor stretches along the river edge.

The existing municipal offices are reinvented as a Business Hub consisting of a suite of event hosting facilities and private members club. The Emporium and Business Hub are directly connected to the Guildhall, which becomes an extension of these new facilities.
